"Food Adventures: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly"

Not every food adventure gave good results. Sometimes, you try something which just doesn't quite cut it:

1) XuanXin Ramen Kitchen @ Gurney Plaza

We loved Xuan Xin Restaurant at Gurney New Wing Level 3, so their new Ramen Kitchen would be nice too rite? So we went for their value set (RM14.80) comes with a drink, ramen and sides.

Kiwi and grape. Not nice.

IMG_9410 (Small)
Pan fried dumpling. This was nice.

IMG_9413 (Small)
Xiao Long Bao.. umm.. no way this will beat Dragon-i's version!

IMG_9411 (Small)
Szechuan ramen. It's ok, but it was just basically ramen with nothing much else.

IMG_9412 (Small)
Ramen with garoupa belly in superior soup. Ok, this was nicer. The fish pieces were also nice.

Verdict: We'll skip their Ramen Kitchen and stick to their actual restaurant!

2) Ben's Diner @ Sunway Tunas

This is a shop just beside Four Seasons. Since we went to Four Seasons one time too many, we decided to try this shop. I read several other blogs, it seems to be worth checking out...

Mushroom soup. So-so.

Salmon. The salmon's pretty fresh and tasted good too.

Pork shank. This was recommended by the waitress and she also pointed to me the newspaper cutting where they were interviewed. Wow. Should be good rite? Well, when it first came, I was immediately turned off by the sheer size of the serving. Seeing a whole piece of meat and bones just doesn't do it for me. The first few bites were ok and the sauce was matching too. But the more I ate it, the more I felt geli that we didn't finish it, quickly paid and went off.

Disclaimer: This is my personal opinion only. It's not my intention to spread bad things about this shop. Please don't go and sue me :P

And that ladies and gentlemen, is why sometimes we just stick to the "old favourites" like this:

1) Daorae Korean BBQ Restaurant

IMG_9468 (Small)
This time we didn't go for their BBQ, but we still get the side dishes.

IMG_9470 (Small)
KimchiJjiGae, same as the first time (RM17). Basically kimchi soup with tofu, vege, meat. Served with a small bowl of rice. Highly recommended!!

IMG_9471 (Small)
Dolsot-bibim-bab (RM19). This was basically rice with vege and egg in stone bowl. Tastes ok, nothing special. See, even old favourites might not be guaranteed nice!

2) The Best of the Best: Dragon-i @ Queensbay Mall

The Real Deal. Xiao Long Bao. Just look at it. We had several colleagues who came from China, and they loved it too.

Leopard: "Ermm, they don't have it over at your place?"
China colleagues: "They have, but it doesn't taste as good as over here." !!

IMG_9497 (Small)
Beancurd with variety of mushroom (RM18). This was unbelievably good. The key is the freshness of the material and the sauce that gels everything together.. Highly recommended!!

IMG_9499 (Small)
Sauteed Diced Chicken with dried chilli (RM20). Superb! A bit spicy though, so beware :P The chicken pieces are crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Wicked!

'Tang yuan' with mango and sago (RM10). This was nice too, but not as good as the mixed fruit version.

One thing that draws us back to Dragon-i is the food quality, which is consistent everytime. This is probably the surest place to get great food. We go there pretty often until the waitress also recognize use and gave me 10% Modolala discount without having to show the badge :P
